The hippocampus is a small, horseshoe shaped organ located within the brain's medial temporal lobe and forms an important part of the limbic system, the region that regulates emotions and is responsible for how we learn. The limbic system is situated on the edge of the cortex, and it includes the hypothalamus and the amygdala (The amygdala is responsible for emotions, moods, and other functions related to things like depression and anxiety). The hippocampus is associated mainly with memory, in particular long-term memory. The organ also plays an important role in spatial navigation (part of the memory responsible for the recording of information about one's environment and spatial orientation). Here is a study of 114 children with ADD/ADHD and the role the hippocampus and amygdala play.

Think of a circuit board. A circuit board is comprised of several different components such as resistors, transistors, capacitors, inductors, and diodes. Conductive wires are used to connect the components to each other. However, a circuit is complete only if it starts and ends at the same point, forming a loop. Your hippocampus is kind of like this circuit board. It is connected to other areas of your brain. When these connections are interrupted, it can send out too much signal or not enough signal. You need these connections to be on point for your brain to function properly. If not, this can leave a person with emotional and memory impairments among other things.

So how can CBD help ADD/ADHD? CBD can help re-balance the area in the hippocampus center. By doing this, your brain can function properly, making those important connections with other areas of the brain. Making some lifestyle changes may help also. Things like diet, meditation and therapy are important tools to use so you can feel better.

Dosing for ADD/ADHD is complex. You must factor in the weight and age of the person. You also have to factor in current medications, if any, that person is on. CBD and ADD/ADHD medications can interfere with each other so you must be careful with dosing. Consulting your pharmacist is best. They may suggest you allow a 2 to 4 hours in between CBD dosing and ADD/ADHD medications like Adderall or Ritalin. If you are interested in using CBD for ADHD, you should contact your doctor or pharmacist to help guide you.
